What is Manifestation? [5 Myths & The Honest Truth]

Manifestation is a hot topic these days. Many thought leaders including Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra and Eckart Tolle advocate using manifestation. They’re clear that it is absolutely possible.

There’s a lot of confusion about what manifestation is. Some think it’s magic, others believe it’s something that only the lucky few can do, and some say they don’t know how to manifest their desires at all.

So, you’ve heard about manifestation, but what is it really?

Manifesting is the creative process of aligning with the energy of the Universe to co-create the life you desire. It’s about consciously bringing the feelings, things, people and experiences into form that will bring you the greatest joy and will serve the highest good for all.

There’s a lot of misunderstanding about manifestation. There’s so many myths and misinformation out there, that it makes manifestation unnecessarily mysterious and illusive.

So, in this article I’m going to explain what manifestation is and what it’s not. I’ll do this by busting some common myths about manifestation.

Let’s get started on our myth busting quest!

Myth #1: Manifestation is Just the Latest Fad

Let’s start with the myth that Manifestation is just the latest fad to catch the wave of popular interest.

Given the number of videos on Tik Tok and YouTube touting the latest manifestation technique, it’s not unreasonable to be skeptical about the hype.

The truth is that manifestation is as old as time.

We’re constantly manifesting whether we know it or not. Or whether we like it or not. All the good things, and the not so good things in our lives – we have manifested them all into form at some level.

As Louise Hay says in her bestselling book, You Can Heal Your Life,

“Life is really very simple. What we give out, we get back…everyone is responsible for everything in our lives, the best and the worst.”

What we’re really talking about here is conscious manifesting. This is when we consciously decide that we want something in our life and then manifest this into reality.

If you’re constantly manifesting and creating your life, you might as well be purposeful about it and choose what you want in to create.

This is what bestselling author, Abraham Hicks calls Deliberate Creation.

You might be surprised to learn that conscious manifesting isn’t a new idea either.

One of the most famous books written on manifestation is Think and Grow Rich written by Napoleon Hill in 1937. This book took twenty years to research and write, so ideas on manifesting were certainly taking shape early in that century.

A less known example is a pamphlet called It Works written by Roy Herbert Jarrett in the 1920’s. In it he explains a process to get anything you want in life.

Jarrett says that you should write down your desires, think of your list constantly and remain silent about your desires. Then once your wish arrives, you should give thanks.

Sound familiar? Sounds very much like one of our scripting manifestation methods!

So, we can definitely debunk the myth that Manifestation is a new fad that will soon be replaced by something else.

Myth #1 Debunked: Manifestation is not a new fad. It’s as old as time. Conscious Manifesting isn’t new either. Early books on manifestation were written in the 1920’s and 1930’s. There’s a new wave of interest in manifestation, but the ideas are not new.

So, now we know that manifestation isn’t just a fad, let’s continue on our quest to answer the question, What is Manifestation?

Myth #2: Manifestation Means Your Desires Will Just Magically Appear

The most common misconception about manifestation is that all you need to do is think about your goal, perhaps write it in your journal a couple of times, and then your goal will just magically drop into your lap.

In 2006 Rhonda Byrne published the book, The Secret.

It quickly became a best seller and has sold over 30 million copies since.

I’m simplifying here, but the central premise is that all you need to do is think positive thoughts and you’ll manifest positive things into your life.

Wow – what an idea! No wonder it’s sold over 30 million copies!

Sounds too good to be true? Yes, it is. If it was that easy there would be 30 million new millionaires walking around. And guess what? There’s not.

Many people read that book, tried to implement the ideas and then when it didn’t work, they concluded that manifestation is a load of rubbish.

This book has done a dis-service to manifestation and has massively mis-managed people’s expectations.

Here’s how manifestation actually DOES work!

A Proven Step-by-Step Process to Manifest Anything You Desire

  1. Clarity: Get clear on what you want.
  2. Remove Blocks: Identify and remove limiting beliefs and energy blocks.
  3. Energise: Bring energy to your goal using meditation, visualisation, positive affirmations and scripting techniques.
  4. Guidance: Receive insight, opportunities and guidance from the Universe directing you towards your goal.
  5. Action: Take inspired action based upon this guidance.
  6. Manifestation: Your goal manifests at a time and in a way that serves the highest good for all.

Myth #2 Debunked: Manifestation doesn’t mean that your desire magically appears. There’s a proven 6 step manifestation process that allows you to manifest anything you desire.

So, now we know that manifestation isn’t magic and that your desires won’t just miraculously drop into your lap one day, let’s carry on with our quest to answer the question, What is Manifestation?

Myth #3: Energy is Woo Woo Rubbish

Everything is energy – Einstein told us as much. We know that every animate and inanimate thing in the Universe is made up of minuscule modules that vibrate constantly.

You, me, the chair I’m sat in and this laptop that I’m typing on. Not to mention my dog who’s fast asleep next to me. We’re all energy and that energy is vibrating at different rates.

Different molecules vibrate at different rates, and these rates can speed up or slow down depending on the environment.

Scientific research is now much clearer on how our thoughts and behaviours can affect our body:

Energy Medicine is now used in hospitals for the treatment of psychological illnesses such as anxiety and OCD and in the integrative treatment of cancer. Check out these articles here and here.

Music is another example of how energetic vibrations can influence us. Soft, relaxing music has a very different impact on us emotionally and physiologically, compared to hard, heavy rock music. These types of music have very different energetic vibrations. More on this here.

People have different energy vibrations too. When you meet someone, you intuitively get a sense of their energy. Low energetic vibrations feel heavy, dense and dark. This is the type of person who you want to step away from – being around them doesn’t feel good. But, high energy vibrations feel light, flowing and lovely to be around.

There’s many things that affect your energy vibrations and impact if you’re vibrating at high or low frequencies. Yoga, meditation and chanting influence your energetic vibrations. Check out this article here.

One of THE most important things that influence your vibrational frequency is your thoughts. According to Louise Hay,

“Every thought we think is creating our future. Each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feelings. The thoughts we think and the words we speak create our experiences.”

The reason why your energy is so important for manifestation is that like attracts like.

If you’re in a high energetic vibration, you’ll attract people, things and experiences with a similar energetic vibration.

And the same goes for low vibrations. They’ll bring people, things and experiences with equally low, dense and heavy vibrations i.e. not stuff you want in your life!

As manifestation experts Abraham Hicks says,

“As you think, you vibrate. As you vibrate, you attract.”

Have you ever heard someone say, ‘it went from bad to worse!’ or “it’s one thing after another!’ Like attracts like.

So, if you’re thinking negative thoughts because you’re having a bad day, this is the energy you’re putting out into the Universe.

Think of yourself as a magnet – you attract people, things and experiences that are vibrating at similar energetic frequency as you are.

It makes sense that if you’re grumpy and in a bad mood, being mean spirited and rude to everyone – you’re not likely to be a magnet for positive experiences.

Contrast this with someone who always has something positive to say, is optimistic, generous, uplifting and good company – someone who is joyful. They’re putting more positive vibes out into the Universe and is experiencing a more enjoyable and higher vibe experience as a result!

Your energy is SO important to manifestation that if you unknowingly have energy blocks, then you can actually stop manifestation from working!

You can try loads of different manifestation methods but if you have energy blocks, none of them are going to work, because energetically you’re stopping the good from coming into your life.

Myth #3 Debunked: Energy isn’t woo woo rubbish. We know that the frequency of our energetic vibrations is influenced by the environment, our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. 

So, now we know that your energy is an important component of manifestation and that there’s some real scientific basis for this! Read on to find out more about our big question, What is Manifestation?

Myth #4: Leveraging Your Mind is New Age Mumbo Jumbo

The success literature documents a long history of people who are explicit in stating that success starts in the mind. Your thoughts, feelings and beliefs have a direct link to your behavior and actions – and your success with manifesting.

I can say definitively that leveraging the power of your mind is not new age mumbo jumbo!

One of the most well-known and clinically proven interventions for psychological disorders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT for short). The central premise is that psychological problems are in part based on unhelpful ways of thinking and learned patterns of unhelpful behavior. So, CBT treatment involves changing these unhelpful thinking patterns.

Even if you don’t have a mental illness such as anxiety or depression, you can still learn from CBT. The ideas from CBT are now used in Executive Coaching with CEO’s of some of the largest Fortune 500 companies.

This is why positive affirmations and mantras are so important to manifestation.

They purposely train your mind towards what you want it to think about and pay attention to.

This in turn will positively impact how you feel and the actions you decide to take. And that will make manifesting your goals a whole lot easier!

There’s still a myth that all that’s needed to achieve success is conscious effort and a lot of hard work.

So many people are not aware of the awesome power of their mind. If you can only learn to control and leverage your mind, you’ll be well on the way to manifesting the life you dream of!

Myth #4 Debunked: Leveraging the power of your mind is not new age rubbish! If you want to manifest your goals and desires easily, you NEED to understand the power that your thoughts have on how you feel and how you act.

So, now we know that our thoughts are also an important component of manifestation and that there’s ways to leverage our thoughts to manifest our desires!

Myth #5: You Have to Believe in The Universe / God / Spirit for Manifestation to Work

For manifestation to be successful, you need to work within the boundaries of your current beliefs.

If you believe that your manifestation efforts will work, they will. If you don’t believe that it will work for you, then guess what? It won’t.

Is the idea of leveraging the power of the Universe, Spirit or God is a bit of a sticking point for you?

I get it.

I’ve been there.

I needed some significant manifestation successes under my belt before I believed that perhaps there’s something in this Source Energy malarky.

I encourage you to suspend dis-belief, be open minded and give the Universe / Source / Spirit a go. You’ve nothing to lose. As Jen Sincero quipped,

“This whole improving your life thing is going to be a hell of a lot easier if you have an open mind about it”

If, like me, you struggle with the word God – try thinking of it as the Universe, your higher self, or as Abraham Hicks calls it, your Inner Being.

“Call it whatever you want – God, Goddess, The Big Guy, The Universe, Source Energy, The Grand Poobah, Gut, Intuition, The Force, The Zone, The Vortex, The Motherload…whatever you choose to call it isn’t important…

What is important is that you begin to develop an awareness of and a relationship with the Source Energy that’s surrounding you and within you…it’ll be your best pal ever if you give it a chance.”

While you can approach manifestation as purely a goal setting exercise – getting clear on what you want and then taking action to achieve your goal – it’ll be a lot easier if you leverage the Universe to give you a helping hand.

Whatever your goal or desire is, the Universe wants you to have it as much as you want to have it!

If you’re struggling to get behind the idea of the Universe / Source Energy, try setting your intention as:

“I am open to the idea that there’s a loving force in the Universe that wants to help me manifest my desires.”

Work within this belief system as you start. Then once you have some success with manifestation under your belt (and you have some proof that this works) then you can go all in!

Myth #5: NOT Debunked! This final myth is one that I’m NOT going to debunk. Whilst you can achieve goals with conscious effort and hard work, it’s going to be a LOT easier and a lot more fun if you leverage the power of the Universe. Not doing so would be like having a Super Power or a Magic Wand and not using it!

I hope my friend, that you now have a good understanding of what manifestation is, and what it’s not!

Manifestation is the creative process by which your thoughts become reality and your dreams come to life. It’s a simple idea that’s shrouded in mystery and confusion, making it very difficult for most people to know how to manifest their dreams into reality.

There’s no need for Manifestation to be difficult or mysterious. If you follow my step-by-step process, you’ll be able to make sense of all this ‘manifesting’ stuff once and for all!

Do what feels good and brings you the most joy. This is the quickest shortcut to getting into a high energetic vibration. Once you’re feeling good, all the things, people and experiences that you desire will begin to easily manifest into form.

Now we’re at the end of our quest to answer the question What is manifestation? there’s one final thing for you to know…

Manifestation is not about getting, it’s about receiving and becoming. Be open minded and ensure you leverage the Super Power that wants you to have your goals and desires as much as you want them.
